My Top 10 Halloween Movies (2020)

Halloween is only 3 three days away so you know what that means...time to talk about spoopy (and not-so spoopy) movies! Yeah baby, my soul is aliiiive!!

(By the way, this list is in no particular order because I cannot simply list these masterpieces in any specific order! Until the end of the post..)

Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy

So I am not exclusively a Scary Godmother 2 girl, I love both movies. However, TROJ is basically the Halloween version of The Grinch so that is one of the many reasons why I favour it over the first movie. Plus, the voice acting in TROJ is much more enjoyable and the kooky animation feels cleaner here. Plus plus, TROJ is the Scary Godmother movie that YTV plays every year so clearly they're Team Jimmy too. It's a simple and short kids movie with a unique art style that stays true to the book's author Jill Thompson and honestly...it's just so kitschy, you can't not love it.

I have to admit though, this movie isn't scary itself but a lot of the facial expressions in this movie are jarring. I mean, look at Jimmy's face. Holy moly.

Corpse Bride

Now, don't get angry at me, but Corpse Bride is my favourite Tim Burton movie. I know there are a million other Burton movies I could cherish but mine is Corpse Bride. I don't do well with jump scares or horror which is why I cling to stuff like Scary Godmother and Charlie Brown around spoopy time. You cannot go wrong here. The songs are catchy as hell, Emily is *chef's kiss* a goddess, (most of) the characters are adorable, there are largely impressive chins, did I mention the catchy songs? I have been watching this movie with my brother every year since it's release and it quickly became a favourite for both of us so not only is it a charming movie, but it's also very important to me.

Hotel Transylvania

I can't believe how many of these movies they've made! I still favour the first one. The animation is clean and colourful and expressive and extremely squash and stretch, the voice acting/cast is the best in this one, the pop songs at the end credits are bops, and it's actually genuinely funny (or I'm just easily amused - which I am - but still). Not to mention it's a great film for the entire family! Trust me, everyone can find something to love with this one. If you haven't watched it yet, I think you definitely should.

Hubie Halloween

Listen. Listen. Is there a plot in this movie? Probably. Does the movie bounce back and fourth and run around a lot? Yes. Is Adam Sandler incredibly hard to understand for 90% of the movie? Yes. But did I enjoy it? Also yes! I really did mean it when I said I'm easily amused because I definitely enjoyed this movie way more than I probably should have. It's a Happy Madison film and I even said at the time, "oh boy. We know what we're walking into." Very enjoyable but a very weird movie. I mean almost anything with Adam 'The Yeller' Sandler is weird. The romance seemed super random and uncomfortable and because there were so many familiar faces in the cast I felt a little overwhelmed but most of Adam's crew came back for this one so that was pretty neat.

Halloweentown

I do not need to explain myself with this one. Teen witch. Debbie Reynolds. A Halloween town. It is the epitome of timeless, wholesome, spoopy, young modern magic. If you need a comfort movie to watch this Halloween, I highly recommend this one.

Monster House

Alright, out of all of the movies I've mentioned so far this one is definitely the spookiest. And again, this is an annual classic for my brother and I. The voice acting (and the all-star cast!), the unique mo-cap animation style, the PLOT. I'll never forget the first time I watched this movie and when the plot twist was revealed I went, "whaaAt? Bruh" (I didn't say 'bruh' but I would have if 'bruh' was a thing back then). This movie accomplishes the goal whether it was intentional or not of appealing to an older kid audience. It still holds up to this day. Iconic.

Any Harry Potter movie

I might not've broken down this list into one specific HP movie because I marathoned the entire series last month for the first time so my brain goes, "they all have fall vibes" but it's true, they do! Those movies are the epitome of fall. And while I don't want to commend She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, these movies are timeless classics and I could honestly watch them everyday. I get the HP hype now, I'm finally on the hype train! (Or should I say...Express?) I would especially recommend movies 1-4.

I especially love Sorcerer's Stone. The lil' babies~

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Yet again here we have a timeless classic. I grew up on Wallace & Gromit, heck, my nickname used to be 'Gromit', so I will vouch for this film until the end of time. While it isn't officially a Halloween movie, I've seen multiple websites adopt it as a Halloween movie so I am too! I mean the whole focus around the movie has harmless spoopy vibes so I couldn't not include it on this list. Plus when it was released in 2005, it was released in October so we're claiming it. I would do anything for Wallace and Gromit -- watch this movie, please and thank you! I love it, you will love it.

Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred

Okay, hear me out. Seriously! Fred is annoying as hell yes, we all know it. However, the plot of this movie is actually really intriguing! If you try to ignore Fred's yelling as much as you can, it's a really enjoyable Halloween movie!
And while this is one of my favourite Halloween movies my head is not up my own butt, yes I know it falls in the 'dollar store movie'/crap category but that's exactly why I enjoy it. I love Fred's mom and while the re-cast for Bertha was a surprise, Daniella Monet did really well with what she was given! It's an easy and quick watch and I'm sorry but it's funny.

ParaNorman

An excuse to discuss another Laika film? Sign me up. This is yet another stop-motion masterpiece that again, definitely looks like it's aimed towards kids but...the older kids. It's spooky, the plot is captivating, and honestly just the artistry itself is what makes me want to watch this movie. Half the time I'm barely listening to what the characters are saying and just staring at the figures and the sets. I love the crap out of Laika and what they create and how long it takes to make these films. ParaNorman definitely comes in second on my It's Spooky List but it's definitely more tame than Monster House (in my opinion).

Speaking of Spooky Lists, if I had to rate all of these movies from certified spookiest to spoopiest (1 being there are spooky bits and 10 being it's all sparkles and rainbows) my order would be:
  1. Monster House
  2. ParaNorman
  3. Scary Godmother
  4. Harry Potter
  5. Corpse Bride
  6. Fred 2
  7. Hubie Halloween
  8. Were-Rabbit
  9. Hotel Transylvania
  10. Halloweentown

And with that I wish you the happiest of Halloweens! Boo and hiss and all that stuff~!

Comments

  1. Chulie this is so darn good! I'm bookmarking this list for next year because I have seen hardly any of them.

I love your love for Scary Godmother, I'm determined to watch that this year, and YES the HP films are seriously autumnal films, perfect for Halloween! And Wallace and Gromit! Ooh, YES! Honestly I think Were Rabbit is my favourite of the W&G films, but I think The Wrong Trousers is the spookiest? That penguin. I don't think I can ever watch it again.

Have you watched Coraline? I haven't seen it properly before but would love to watch THAt together this halloween!

    xx
