My Top 10 Movies
Since my taste in movies changes all the time, I thought I'd like to make a list of what my favourites are in 2021, to see if that list shifts at all. It's really hard for me to narrow down my favourites to a list of ten since there are so many films that define me and my sense of humour/personality. But as of 2021, these are my favourite movies. Most of these films have been on this list for years, while some have bumped others off. I like to define 'favourite films' as movies you cannot get bored of no matter how many times you watch and that make you feel happy or comfortable. While my favourite story-based games list was in a specific order, this list is not.
#10 - Enchanted
There are a few Disney princess films that I hold near and dear to my heart (The Little Mermaid and Tangled) but compared to those movies, I can watch this one every day on loop and not get tired of it. The songs are crazy catchy, Amy Adams KNOCKED this role out of the park and because Ariel is my favourite princess I obsessed over the Little Mermaid nods in this movie (including receptionist Jodie Benson!!) The locations in this movie are so iconic, they make you feel like you're taking a wacky guided tour of New York. Plus, grumpy Patrick Dempsey. Mom is in love with Pat so Enchanted became 'our' movie which I'm sure is why I hold it so near and dear to my heart. I fell in love with the mix match of 2D and live action/3D animation and the costumes were sensational. Giselle also acts a lot like Buddy the Elf does which might be another winning factor for me. If I ever get married I want to walk down the aisle to So Close. This movie is the ultimate comfort film on this list.
#9 - Shrek 2
Now, if you know me well you know that I am a Shrek girl. For some reason this franchise has just always stuck to me more than any other. I love this universe and their characters so much, the humour in Shrek was just wayyyy ahead of its time. And while I love all of the movies equally (excluding Shrek 4), there's just something about Shrek 2 that makes it stand out for myself and anyone I talk to about it. It's the fact you get to see Shrek's hunky human form and the inclusion of Fairy Godmother and Charming, it's the fairytale twist on Hollywood and the unforgettable lines. This movie has woven its way into regular conversations with my brother and was what influenced my username for my old cosplay account.
#8 - Spider-Man 3
Again, if you know me well you know Spidey is my favourite superhero. The Spider-Man franchise is again a franchise that has stuck with me my entire life and has always been at the forefront of my focus. I grew up watching the Tobey movies on repeat, obsessing over Peter and Gwen in the Andrew movies and, like many, hoping and crossing fingers that they all come together in No Way Home. My self-care time was spent playing Spider-Man 2 on the PS2 and roleplaying. I have many Spiderverse OCs I have yet to share with the world and again, many of this film's lines have trickled into my vocabulary rolodex. My brother and I recite lines to each other all the time. Venom freaks me the hell out in this movie but the subplot with Harry and Emo Peter are absolute highlights.
#7 - Elf
Elf is the one movie that's assigned for a specific time of year that I can watch all year round. In fact, that's exactly what I did a few years back. Buddy the Elf is my spirit animal and this film is what sparked my love for Will Ferrell. It's just so awkward and goofy and every time I watch this movie it heightens my eagerness to try spaghetti with maple syrup, as disgusting as I know that will be. My family and friends know how much I love this movie as every year during Christmas I add new Elf merch to my collection. When I was fifteen, I had my friends over for a sleepover and we watched Elf on repeat until we fell asleep. When we woke up, the main menu was still playing so it had been on loop all night; it was like merry hypnotism. I almost know this movie by heart word for word and I am not ashamed to admit it.
#6 - Megamind
Megamind is one of those movies that did not gain as much praise as it deserved, not by a long shot. The humour in this masterpiece is unmatched and yes, I said masterpiece. This movie is a masterpiece. DreamWorks does not miss. From the incredible cast to the unique animation style to the plot and plot twists. And the lines. Who comes up with this stuff? This is another movie that I find wandering into conversation with friends and family. Every once in a while someone will say 'shool' or 'Hal Stewart' or 'there is no Queen of England' or 'I have eyes that can see right through lea-a-a-ad'. This one is a family favourite, especially because Megamind can be enjoyed by everyone. I could go on and on about how much I love this movie but for now let's just say that if you haven't seen it, please watch it. It's so horribly under-appreciated.
#5 - Toy Story
Hoo hoo hoo, now this story has deep roots in my family, let me tell you. So Toy Story came out two years before I was born so I started watching it when I was a baby. I loved this movie so much that I remember eventually assembling the entire cast of toys and having tea parties with them in the living room. I would play When She Loved Me on repeat when Toy Story 2 came out and act out Emily spinning with Jessie in my bedroom with my own Jessie doll. I loved Toy Story so much that when my brother was born, I wanted to name him Woody (he's still named after a Toy Story character but not after the plastic cowboy). This movie became my older cousins' favourites and every time we went to visit them, they would have it on and would be reciting it the entire way. Toy Story became apart of who we were and still are today so yes, this is a very important movie to me. To this day my older cousin still sends me Toy Story memes. There was even a Toy Story game that came out on the PS3 that my brother and I recently revisited and when we played it back in the day, we would roleplay and pretend Jessie and Woody lived in this abandoned desert. And again, lines from this movie trickle into everyday conversation and my brother and I to this day cannot rewatch Toy Story 3. When we went to see it in the theatre, we broke. We love this franchise with our whole hearts.
#4 - The Force Awakens
This is definitely a newbie to my favourites list as of 2015. I saw this movie for the very first time on my very first official date and needless to say, my attention very quickly left my companion (sorry). I fell in love with Rey from the first moment I saw her (as did many). I loved that we shared so many physical similarities and that her name was so close to my own. I loved that she was just some random girl in the desert that acquired Luke's saber. She was someone new and independent and was still learning who she was and I loved her for it. I bawled my eyes out at the return of Han, Chewie, Leia and Luke and fumed at the confusion I was feeling over Kylo Ren. On one hand I was stunned by his beauty and that bridal carry and on the other hand, it took me a long time to forgive him for k*lling Han. The new environments in this movie were and are just so lovely and the new cast of characters fits into this world so naturally. This was our trilogy and I fell in love with all of it. I'm head over heels for this movie.
#3 - Meet the Robinsons
This movie has always stuck with me for many reasons. Firstly, it was another under-appreciated gem. Secondly, the animation style was so squash and stretch and the environments and characters were so unique (I love Franny Robinson with my whole heart). The lead-up to and the reveals themselves at the end of the movie were so satisfying and again, iconic lines that glued themselves into my brain. Little Wonders has always been a core song in our family and oddly enough, the movie's motto 'keep moving forward' has always brought me comfort in my low moments. So I guess it actually worked. Thank you, Wilbur Robinson. Or I guess Cornelius Robinson. This movie is very cute with the core message of family, the effects of time travel and the results of upsetting the space-time continuum.
#2 - The Incredibles
The Incredibles universe is heavily routed into my family. I have been watching this movie for as long as I can remember. I've watched it out at a friend's cabin, in the car, at Disneyland, everywhere. My brother and I were addicted to the PS2 game when we were younger and have completed the game more times than I can count. The main message of the importance of family really stuck with us as I'm sure it did for many. The whole family just adored this movie. In fact the other day, my brother randomly brought up how he'd started listening to the soundtrack the day before I favourited it on Spotify. This movie will always be with us and was such a sturdy staple growing up that it's still as important to this day. This movie taught us the importance of bad guys and to run away from danger, and that Mozart makes babies smarter. This movie reminds me of simpler times and of being at the Disney parks and I love it.
#1 - Monsters University
So for the longest time Monsters Inc. was one of my favourite movies and now it's its later released prequel! Monsters University came out a few years before I would graduate from high school and move onto post-secondary so this was a calmer and more colourful (and highly exaggerated) introduction to the new world I was about to jump into. Mike showed me how hard I'd have to work in university and just the appeal of seeing monsters attending school was something I adored. My brother and I both agree that we favour this movie over the first, just by a smidge. There's a weird nostalgia I feel with this movie since I'm no longer a university student. I still adore my Mike MU hat, mainly because I wore it to Disneyland, lied to Lightning McQueen and said I was a scaring student and then he scared me by revving his engine.
And those are my favourite movies as of June 2021! Expect a new blogpost from me if anything changes but if you see no updates, it's safe to say my favourites are cemented~
***Edit from months later -- yeah, go ahead and add Flushed Away to this list because my shotty memory forgot it.
Oh my goodness, the way my memories were swirling as I read about how you love these movies was delightful! So many of these films I grew up with, too, and I just love how much they mean to you. And TOY STORY?! That story about you wanting to call him Woody *sobs* and oh yes! You reminded me of movie afternoons where I'd bundle up all my toys and pile them up to watch a movie, and I used to do it with Toy Story and I'd completely forgotten that! Thank you for unlocking this memory *hugs*
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple on the list that I haven't yet seen, but I'm definitely planning to (have Spiderman ready to goooo!) and I admit right here: I've only seen The Incredibles once. Back when it came out. Just... just the once. Tee hee 👉🏻👈🏻
